ASG UK are proud to have been involved in the successful delivery of two new automated vehicle barriers controlling the ingress and egress of vehicles at FedEx Express – Llantrisant Depot, on behalf of Apleona UK.
FedEx Express Llantrisant Depot is a key regional logistics facility supporting time-critical parcel distribution across South Wales. It operates as part of the wider FedEx Express network, facilitating the efficient handling, sorting, and dispatch of domestic and international shipments, with a focus on reliability, security, and operational continuity.
Apleona UK is a leading facilities management provider delivering integrated services across a diverse portfolio of commercial, industrial, and public sector environments. The company specialises in maintaining critical infrastructure through a combination of technical expertise, compliance-driven delivery, and operational efficiency, ensuring safe, reliable, and high-performing built environments for its clients.
Project Brief
ASG UK were commissioned by Apleona UK to design and deliver a replacement automated barrier solution at the FedEx Express Llantrisant depot. The existing barriers had reached end-of-life and were exhibiting increasing reliability issues, presenting a risk to site operations. Following a technical and commercial assessment, full replacement was identified as the most effective solution.
The upgrade was therefore prioritised to ensure operational continuity and minimise the risk of disruption to critical logistics activities.
Design & Specification
Automated Barrier Specification
FAAC’s B680 L automated traffic barrier was specified for the main entrance automation. The FAAC B680 L automatic barrier is a high-performance solution designed for intensive-use environments, supporting beam lengths up to 8 metres for wide access points. Its 24V hybrid drive system delivers a 100% duty cycle with fast, adjustable opening speeds and exceptional durability, rated in excess of 2 million cycles.
The barrier incorporates advanced safety features including an absolute encoder with obstacle detection and automatic reverse on impact, alongside an integrated control board with dual loop detector capability. A modular beam design allows flexible configuration and simplified installation, while optional LED lighting enhances visibility.
Robust construction, ease of maintenance, and retrofit compatibility with existing FAAC foundations make the B680 L a commercially efficient and reliable upgrade solution.
Installation & Delivery
The installation and delivery phase was carefully planned and executed to ensure zero disruption to site operations. All works were undertaken during normal working hours, with the main entrance remaining fully operational throughout the programme. A phased approach was adopted, allowing the existing barriers to be decommissioned and replaced sequentially, ensuring continuous vehicle access at all times.
Detailed coordination with site stakeholders, combined with robust traffic management and safety controls, enabled the team to complete the installation efficiently without any downtime. This approach ensured seamless continuity of operations within a live, high-traffic logistics environment without compromising site security.
The installation of the new FAAC B680 L barrier system has delivered immediate operational and commercial benefits to the site. The modern, high-duty components significantly reduce ongoing maintenance requirements compared to the legacy equipment, minimising reactive callouts and lowering whole-life costs. Enhanced reliability ensures consistent performance in a high-traffic environment, reducing the risk of failure-related disruption.
From a security perspective, the system provides improved control of vehicle access through faster response times, integrated safety detection, and more precise operation, helping to prevent unauthorised entry and maintain a secure site. Collectively, these improvements deliver a robust, cost-efficient solution aligned with the operational demands of a busy logistics facility.
